Website content is something all websites and blogs need. It doesn’t matter what your site is about, if you sell products or are trying to get more sign-ups for your weekly newsletter. You should be updating your site on a regular basis with valuable, quality content. But there are some things to keep in mind for doing and avoiding with your content.

The following are a list of things you should be doing with your website content.

Include personality – It always helps to add a little personality to your website content, especially when it is a blog post. This gets readers interested and makes them want to share your content.

Choose the right article length – Have an appropriate article length that isn’t too long or too short. Most readers won’t dedicate time to reading more than 1,000 words, so this should be your maximum. However, if it’s too short it won’t provide valuable information. Keep your copy between 400 and 1,000 words to be safe.

Be specific about dates and times – If you are posting time-sensitive content, be very specific about the dates and times. If you’re announcing a promotion or sale, make sure your readers know when it starts and stops, in case they’re reading the week after.

Utilize SEO keywords – Always do proper keyword research and include SEO keywords in all of your content. This helps it get found through search engines.

Don’ts

Here are some things to avoid before posting your website content.

Post without running through a plagiarism checker – You always want content that is unique and original. If it is a copy of other content on the Internet, yours will be blacklisted and the search engines won’t pick up on it. Make sure you run it through a good plagiarism checker.

Don’t include content you have not proofread – If you’re hiring another writer, always read through it first and fix any edits that need to be done. Proofreading is about fixing spelling and grammar, as well as adjusting the copy to fit your needs.

Post too little or too often – Updating your site regularly with valuable and quality content is important, but don’t post too often and overwhelm your readers. About once a day is ideal, or at least 1-2 times a week. Don’t go more than a week before posting something new.

Write like it’s a sales pitch – You may be trying to promote products or announce services you provide, but don’t make it too obvious. If your content seems like a sales pitch, readers will skim it and not share it with anyone. Make it relevant, interesting and entertaining.
