Creating a Website Content Team

As your website grows you may see the need to take on more than one dedicated writer. In fact, if you own more than one site you may see the need to take on several writers. This can be a time consuming and stressful task. In order to simplify the task, here are some steps in creating a website content team that will help you in the long-term.

First Step: Content Manager

The first step in creating a website content team is to hire a content manager. A content manager is not just a writer. Basically, a content manager handles all aspects of the content team. They can discuss issues with the content writers, make sure writers are staying on task, edit the work of writers and fire writers when necessary. They can also make sure that content is posted to the correct areas and that content off-site meets the standards of the site regulations. In other words, the content manager takes on the stress and scheduling that you may not have time for. You will want to make sure the content manager can write, edit and handle all the tasks required including possible WordPress and social media marketing techniques.

Requirements of Writers

If you are using a content manager or if you are finding the content team on your own, you will need to state the requirements of the writers. These requirements should consist of the following areas.

  • Word count for various forms of writing including articles, blogs and press releases.
  • Deadlines for various work and extensions for those deadlines.
  • Byline requirements or full rights to content written.
  • NDA disclosures
  • Payment methods and frequency of payment.

Hiring the Writers

Make sure that when you begin hiring the writers you will be able to pay the writers and provide them with a contract. When the contract has been agreed upon, signed and the work has started the best step to take is to allow a content manager to take over. However, if you choose to handle the tasks on your own, be sure you are up to the task and have a schedule that permits everything that deals with managing writers and the content they produce.
