Website and blog owners who need large quantities of content are starting to turn to what is called a content mill. They do it for a number of reasons, ranging from getting a lot of content in a short period of time (or assuming they will), to not wanting to take the time to find a writer. Whatever the reason, here are some reasons your content mill isn’t going to produce results.
What is a Content Mill?
A content mill is a site that hires multiple writers to handle the content they are doing for their clients. You, the client, will pay the content mill for certain content and tell them what you’re looking for. The mill then puts the articles into a pool where writers can choose the ones they want to work on and send it back in. It may seem like a good system, but there are many drawbacks to it.
It is Time Consuming
If you think you will save time and get your work faster, you might be in for a big surprise. It is very rare to request content from a content mill and get it in the 48 they may have promised you. It is time consuming for you and the mill to get the work done. Typically, you request the work, they get it ready, come up with titles and put it in a pool. Then you have to wait for writers to pick it up, research and write it, but that’s not all. Usually 1-3 people will review and revise the article. If it needs heavy revisions, it goes back to the original writer, you have to wait for them to edit it and turn it in, and another editor to review it one final time. By the time it gets back to you, it’s several days, a week or longer.
The Quality is Often Low
Writers don’t usually get paid fair rates when they work for content mills, so you may not be getting the best quality. Some content mills re strict about their writers who work for them, while others don’t ask to see samples or check their qualifications. After all that waiting, the quality you get back might not be what you’re looking for.
You May Not Get Revisions
The editors of content mills will try their best to go through work and make it the best, but this doesn’t mean you will like what you get back. And many times, you don’t have the ability to request revisions, which means you get what you get.
After all this time and money wasted, you could have easily found a qualified writer to handle the research and writing for you, and had it done within 1-2 days. If you have a large volume, hire more than one writer, or hire a writer who is able to handle full-time projects.
